Area Sports Briefs: Carson, Cavs strong in major track meet

Carson’s Zachary Marchinko and Brenden Westbrook had second-place finishes in the Marvin Ridge Invitational.
Marchinko, a senior who signed with Charlotte, took second in the 1600 in 4:27.31. Westbrook was second in the long jump with an effort of 20 feet, 11 3/4 inches.
Other top-10 finishes by Carson’s boys were a fourth in the 400 by Nick Cox (50.61) and a ninth-place effort by Garrett Ingold in the 3200 (10:11).

Carson’s girls were led by freshman McKenzie Gadson. She placed third in the 200 (25.64) and fifth in the long jump (15-6 1/2).

North Rowan’s girls competed at Marvin Ridge.
Payton Russell placed second in the 400 (58.77) and fifth in the 200 (26.03).
Chevy Blaire took fourth in the discus (96-7) and fifth in the shot put (35-9). Meliya Parker was eighth in the 100 (16.69) and ninth in the 300 hurdles (50.08).

For North Rowan’s boys, Michael Streater was fourth in the high jump (6-0). Courtney Roseborough was fifth in the triple jump (42-0-1/2).
A’Jon Jones placed eighth in the 300 hurdles (43.46). Terry Cathcart was 10th in the shot put (41-0-1/4). North’s 4×200 relay team ran 1:33.29 for eighth place.

North Hills tied Sacred Heart 1-1 in soccer.
Morgan Trexler scored the goal for North Hills. Elizabeth Jones made 17 saves for the Eagles.

East Carolina’s Eric Tyler (South Rowan) had two hits and two RBIs in Saturday’s 5-2 win against Monmouth.

College softball
Sidney Grkman (Carson) had three RBIs on Saturday as UNC Greensboro won games against Robert Morris and George Washington.

NCAA tournament
SPOKANE, Wash. — Dillon Brooks refused to let top-seed Oregon and the Pac-12 Conference be eliminated on the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, scoring 25 points and leading the Ducks to 69-64 win over No. 8 seed Saint Joseph’s in the second round of the West Regional on Sunday night.
Oregon (30-6) plays Duke in a regional semifinal in Anaheim Thursday.
