Area Sports Briefs: Trojans knock off West; South falls to Concord

Northwest Cabarrus beat West Rowan, 3-2, in SPC baseball on Monday.
West (9-2 SPC) is still tied for first with Carson.
Alex Rodriguez struck out nine for the Trojans.
Dalton Coleman drove in two runs for the Trojans, and Devon Faggart had two hits.
Brandon Walton and Kacey Otto had two hits each for the Falcons.
Northwest scored three runs in the fourth to hand West lefty Bryan Ketchie his first loss. Ketchie struck out six.
South loses
Fourth-place South Rowan lost, 9-8, at Concord to fall to 6-5 in the SPC.
South fell into a 7-1 hole and couldn’t climb all the way out.
Tyler Shepherd drove in three runs for the Raiders. Bo Corriher knocked in two. Blake Johnson had a sac fly. Walker Joyce had a run-scoring double.
Johnson started and took the loss.
SPC
Cam Kepley’s two-hitter lifted Central Cabarrus to a 5-0 win against Robinson.

Greg Waslo pitched Hickory Ridge to a 4-1 win against Cox Mill.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators won 2-1 against visiting Delmarva on Monday.
Kannapolis (2-3) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on RBIs by Cody Daily and Antonio Rodriguez.
Johnathan Frebis pitched five strong innings and the bullpen held the lead.
Kannapolis hosts Delmarva again tonight.

Prep soccer
Salisbury lost 1-0 to visiting West Davidson on Monday.
Salisbury was out-shot 16-4.
Salisbury (11-2-1, 2-2 CCC) got strong play from the back five of Amelia Steinman, Neillie Brown, Kathryn Rusher, Bethanie Stauffer, and keeper Juliana Anderson, who stuffed several pointblank shots.
Julia Honeycutt and Kayla Honeycutt also played well and slowed down CCC Player of the Year Anna Rose sink.
“There are not enough metaphors, cliches, or examples of coachspeak to say how proud of my team I am,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “ If we play with the same mentality and heart that we played with tonight, I will never, ever walk off the field disappointed.”
Salisbury plays North Rowan on Wednesday.

Prep football
North Rowan defensive end/linebacker Zion DeBose visited East Carolina on the Pirates’ Junior Day on Saturday.
Trojans make hire
Northwest Cabarrus named Brandon Gentry as its new head football coach on Monday. Gentry, 36, has been the defensive coordinator at T.L. Hanna High in Anderson, S.C.

Prep tennis
East Rowan stayed undefeated on Monday in a 9-0 win against West Rowan.
East is at Robinson on Wednesday.
Hornets win again
Salisbury stayed undefeated by rolling 9-0 against Lexington.
Salisbury (12-0) plays at Thomasville on Wednesday.

Prep golf
East Rowan’s golf team stayed unbeaten in SPC matches by winning at McCanless on Monday.
Bryson Sprinkle and Nick Lyerly shot 34s for the Mustangs. Logan Shuping shot 39. Ben Rollins and Christopher Queen shot 40s.
Hickory Ridge finished eight shots behind the Mustangs. Carson finished third, 15 shots off the pace.
Concord’s Stephen Carroll shot 33 for medalist honors. Robert Bauer (38) and Patrick Street (40) led the Cougars. Andrew Hubbard (39) and Parker Chavis (40) led South Rowan.

Prep softball
Anna Shafer pitched East Rowan to a 5-0 victory against Carson.
East is 7-4 in the SPC.
Falcons win
West Rowan won 5-1 against SPC foe Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.
Taylor Martin had two hits and scored three runs.
Peyton Greene drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts.
Savannah Hott had two hits for the Trojans.
Wonders win
Kaylee Cook struck out seven as A.L. Brown won 4-3 against Mount Pleasant on Monday.
Cook and Savanna Hagler had two hits. Kaitlin Moore and Kelly Chrismon had two RBIs each.

College baseball
Harrison Bell (East Rowan) pitched an inning for the University of Charleston, striking out two in an 11-6 victory over Fairmont State on Saturday.
Indians home
Catawba hosts Winston-Salem State tonight at 6 p.m.

College softball
Radford’s Marissa Yow (West Rowan) hit a homer in a 3-1 win against Gardner-Webb on Sunday.
The freshman is batting .287 with four homers and 24 RBIs.

College golf
After two rounds oft the SAC Women’s Golf Championships, Catawba’s Victoria Hedrick is in 15th place at 161, while Madison Moore is in 27th at 165.
The final round of the championship will be today at the 5,881-yard, par-72 Monroe Country Club.

College lacrosse
Saint Leo held on for a 15-14 victory over host Catawba in women’s lacrosse action on Sunday at Shuford Stadium.
Meredith Jones, Alyssa Corace and Megan Shortt scored three goals each for Catawba (5-8).

Local golf
Clyde Crawford made a hole-in-one at Warrior on Monday.
Crawford aced the 112-yard No. 6 hole from the gold tees with a pitching wedge.
His playing partners were Ed Lockhart and Everett Hancock.
Country Club ace
Ryan Rich made a hole-in-one on No. 6 at the Country Club last week.
He used an 8-iron on the 153-yard hole.
Playing partners Steve Colwell, Chris Fowler, Gavin Misner and Kevin Watson witnessed the shot.
McCanless Couples
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The first-place team was David Huneycutt,Harry Owens and Alex Miller.
The second-place team was Azalee Story, Leslie Miller and Mary Seaford.
Alex Miller won closest to the pin. Leslie Miller won longest putt.

Mid. school baseball
West Rowan defeated Knox 17-1 on Monday.
Lane Adkins won for the Bulldogs (5-1). Daniel Sell had three hits, including a grand slam.
West plays Thursday at China Grove.

Salisbury High Athletic Boosters are scheduled to meet on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the media center.

Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart’s boys tennis team won 6-3 against Forsyth Country Day, with Ben Childress, Sean Archer and Luke Graeber winning in singles.
Archer/Childress, Brody Dillon/Juan Salazar and Riley Dillon/Graeber swept doubles.

Sacred Heart tennis also won against South Davie. Childress, Archer, Dillon and Colin Donaldson had singles wins, and the Dolphins swept doubles to win the match, 7-2.

Sacred Heart’s girls soccer team won 8-0 against Immaculate Heart of Mary from High Point.
Sutton Webb and Caroline Cardelle scored three goals each. Marina Mueller and Spencer Hansen scored a goal each. Caroline Clark posted the shutout in goal.

Cardelle and Theresa Holland scored two goals each, and Webb had one goal. Spencer Hansen played outstanding defense.

College softball
Mars Hill pitcher Lacee Hunsucker (Carson) got her first college win on Monday when the Lions beat Lees-McRae 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Hunsucker allowed three hits and no walks. She struck out two.

Belmont Abbey’s Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) got a win on Saturday.
Jacobs (4-8) pitched into the sixth inning, allowing one earned run, and the Crusaders held on to beat Converse, 8-7.

NC Wesleyan pitcher Logan Lowery (South Rowan) is having a great year. She’s 12-4 with 82 strikeouts and a 2.86 ERA.
Lowery pitched a 4-2 win against Mary Washington on Sunday.

Sidney Grkman (Carson) hit her fourth homer of the season for UNCG on Sunday. Grkman is batting .268 with 15 RBIs.

College baseball
Charleston’s Harrison Bell ( East Rowan) threw three shutout innings on Monday in a 7-2 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan.

College tennis
Catawba ended its women’s tennis season with a 6-3 victory against Belmont Abbey on Monday.
The Indians finished 13-11.
Catawba’s men beat Belmont Abbey, 8-1, to finish 11-11.

Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy’s baseball team defeated Hickory Christian, 15-1.
Graham Smith pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts.
Mitch Jeter had four hits, including a triple and a double. Archie Dees and Noah Stockton had triples. Will Nesbitt had a double.

Basketball training
A special basketball training series is being offered to girls in grades 3-8.
These training sessions are hosted by the Rowan Lady Flames in conjunction with The National Basketball Academy.
The goal is to help build Rowan County’s young female basketball players.
Former Salisbury and NC State standout Shayla Fields and former High Point University star Ashlee Samuels will led the workouts.
Sessions start on Monday, April 18, from 6:30-8:30 p.m, at Grace Academy in Rockwell.
Cost is $20 per session. The cost for the six-week program is $100.
