Area Sports Briefs: 100 wins for Nelson; Bare shoots 72

Salisbury High grad Erika Nelson won her 100th tennis match for Wheaton College on Saturday when Wheaton (14-1) won, 6-3, against Kalamazoo.
Nelson, a senior, was a winner at No. 3 doubles. Her doubles partner is Miranda Kay.

College golf
UNC Pembroke freshman Alexandria Bare (South Rowan) shot 80-72-83 in the Peach Belt Conference Championships in Florida.
Bare tied for seventh and helped UNCP finish fourth.
Bare’s 72 on Saturday was the best round anyone shot in the tournament.
Bare’s previous best round was 80.
Catawba
Catawba’s men were in 12th place at 317 after Sunday’s opening day of the SAC Championships.
Jordan Taylor shot 76 to lead the Indians. Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) shot 78.

College baseball
Charlotte’s Colton Laws (Carson) earned his third win of the season on Saturday when the 49ers won, 8-4, against Middle Tennessee.
Laws (3-2) pitched six innings and struck out six.

In East Carolina’s 8-2 win against Memphis on Saturday, Eric Tyler (South Rowan) had two hits and scored two runs.
Travis Watkins, former Cox Mill star, drove in four runs for the Pirates.

Andy Austin (East Rowan) had two RBIs for UNC Wilmington in a 15-5 win over. East Tennessee.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost, 2-1, at Hickory on Sunday and fell to 4-7.
Kannapolis collected six hits, including three by shortstop Grant Massey. Massey had two doubles.
Crawdads starting pitcher Wes Benjamin struck out six batters in five innings and allowed one run.
Kannapolis starter Luis Martinez (0-2) struck out five in five innings.
The Intimidators continue a seven-game trip tonight in West Virginia.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The first-place team was Azalee Story, Lexie Miller, Mary Seaford, Jay Crane and Ballard Hunter.
The second-place team was Beverly & Ty Cobb, Kim & Walt Kincaid and David Huneycutt.
Huneycutt won closest to the pin. Seaford won longest putt.

Championships
The Rowan County Championships for golf and track and field will be decided on Tuesday.
Track is at East Rowan, with field events and the 3200 starting at 4:30 p.m. The other running events will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Golf is 18 holes at Warrior.
