SALISBURY — On Monday, community members will bring their complaints and concerns to the Board of Education about a recent proposal that would shutter six area elementary schools. The scenario would close Mt. Ulla, Morgan, Faith and Enochville, in addition to the already slated Cleveland and Woodleaf elementaries.
The board will discuss the proposal at the business meeting, to be held in the Wallace Educational Forum board room at 4 p.m. The board will also discuss having another retreat to wrestle with the proposal.
At the board’s April 7 retreat, members expressed interest in seeing what an accelerated schedule for the construction of the consolidated western elementary school would look like. According to the board’s online agenda, a 14-16 month construction schedule for the building would cost nearly $20.3 million while an accelerated 12-month schedule would cost $21.2 million. Costs include site work.
The district’s new teacher recruiter will report on progress. According to the online agenda, the recruiter has visited career fairs at twelve colleges and universities in North Carolina. Of 45 potential candidates, 9 have secured interviews with the system and 3 have signed conditional employment contracts. In January, the board voted to hire a recruiter with a base salary of $23,000 and travel and materials costs for $10,000. It is a 12-month, recurring position.
In other business the board will:
- Look at plans for a field house at West Rowan High School.
- Receive updates on its energy savings performance contract.
- Look at a contract for a roof consulting firm.
