SALISBURY — Police said a father and daughter argument over money got out of hand when the father allegedly choked the daughter and she cut him with a kitchen knife.

Salisbury Police responded to the 900 block of Fairmont Avenue on Thursday night after someone called regarding a disturbance there.

The daughter told police her father choked her and she cut him on the hand with the knife.

Police charged Steven Jay Goodman, 63, with misdemeanor assault on a female by a male over 18, and Monica Goodman Grubb, 30, with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Goodman was issued a written promise to appear in court June 1 and his daughter was issued a $1,000 secured bond. She has since been released from the Rowan County Detention Center.

Police Capt. Melonie Thompson said Grubb asked her father for $3 and he wouldn’t give it to her and so the two argued. He went to his room to “get away” from her. Grubb went to the bedroom door and banged on it. When Goodman opened the door he grabbed Grubb by the throat and pushed her back.

Goodman said he did not choke his daughter, but did put his hands around her throat, however, Grubb disagrees. Grubb then went to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. She cut her father on the hand, police said.

The incident happened in front of Grubb’s two children, a report said.
