Area Sports Briefs: Edwards honored by A-10

George Mason sophomore Eric Edwards (Salisbury) was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference men’s golf All-Academic team.
The five-man team was selected by the league’s golf media relations directors.
Edwards, a finance major, was the Patriots’ top golfer this season, finishing tied for third at the Atlantic 10 Championships, and was named to the All-Conference team.
Edwards was on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll both semesters, which requires a 3.5 GPA.
Edwards led the Patriots with a 73.27 scoring average which ranks fourth in the George Mason record book. He had three top-10 finishes and made 83 birdies.
The 64 Edwards shot at the OBX Collegiate in October was the second-lowest round in school history.

Prep baseball
North Rowan catcher Jake Pritchard, the Central Carolina Conference Player of the Year, is headed to Lenoir-Rhyne.

Junior Legion
Brycen Holshouser pitched six innings as Carson beat Rowan County, 6-2, on Friday. Matt Donahue closed it out on the mound.
Cole Hales had two hits.
Zach Lee had the key hit to drive in two runs and break a 2-all tie in the fourth. Carson Beacham drove in a run with a groundout. Cole Hales had two hits.
Carson hosts West Rowan today at 4. The teams will play two games. The opener is a league game.

Showcase baseball
The South Charlotte Panthers “2018 team” of rising juniors is off to the best start in program history at 19-0.
The Panthers won the Perfect Game North Carolina Super 25 recently and are competing now in the Prospects Select Black Bear 16U Classic in Greenville, S.C.
Cameron Prugh (Carson) is 4-0 on the mound with a 1.66 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 21 innings.Prugh is batting .240.
Maddux Holshouser (Carson) is 3-0 on the mound with a 2.23 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings.
Clayton Gilmore (AL Brown) is 1-0 on the mound with a 1.05 ERA and eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. He’s batting .227.

The South Charlotte Panthers “2017” team is 9-1-1. The team is mostly rising seniors, although Carson rising junior Owen White plays above his age group on the team.
The Panthers will travel to Atlanta on July 1 for the week long Perfect Game WWBA 17U Championship.
West Rowan’s Austin Love is 1-0 pitching and is batting .318 with three doubles.
White is 1-0 with a save.He’s batting .283 with five doubles and a homer. He’s scored 13 runs while driving in eight.

Local golf
McCanless hosted a nine-hole Junior Tournament on Thursday.
1st Place: Cade Cranfield (40), 2nd Place Lexie Miller (49).
Longest Drive: Miller.
