Area Sports Briefs: Rowan County, Carson win in Junior Legion playoffs

Jake Davis, who will be a rising freshman at East Rowan, was the winning pitcher and drove in two runs as Rowan County’s Junior Legion team won, 9-3, at Walkertown in the first round of the playoffs on Friday.
The Walkertown Wolfpack (15-6) won the Northwest Division.
Rowan County (14-7) finished second to Carson in the “Mid-Area” Division. The top two teams in each of four divisions advanced to the playoffs.
Rowan strung together several hits and got seven runs in the fifth inning.
Chandler Lippard drove in three runs for Rowan County. McGuire Smith and Wayne Mize had two hits each.
Game 2 in the best-of-three series will be played tonight at Newman Park at 7 p.m.

Carson (24-4) opened the playoffs with a victory at home against Davidson County, the runner-up in the Northwest Division.
Carson trailed 3-0 but made a comeback behind the pitching of Matt Donahue. Donahue pitched a complete game and struck out four.
Brycen Holshouser drove in two runs for Carson. Game 2 of the series will be played at Lexington tonight.

In the other series in Area III, Concord is battling Southeast Guilford (Concord leads 1-0) and the Kannapolis Cardinals are playing Randolph County.

Legion baseball
Kannapolis lost to Winston-Salem, 7-2, in the opening game of a best-of-three, first-round series on Friday.
Playing at home, Kannapolis led 2-0 early, but Winston-Salem put together a six-run eighth.
The teams play Game 2 tonight at Mount Tabor High.
In other opening games, Mocksville outscored Kernersville, 12-9; Stanly County beat Greensboro, 3-1; Concord topped Eastern Randolph, 8-5, and Davidson County beat Mooresville, 13-4.

Rowan County will start a series against the Mooresville-Davidson County winner at Newman Park on July 4.

West football seats
Reserved seating for the 2016 West Rowan football season is now available for renewal.
Anyone that purchased reserved seats last year can renew their seats until July 31.
New reserved seats can be purchased after Aug 1.

The Falcons open their season hosting, Mooresville on Aug 19.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators fell, 4-3, at Hickory on Friday.
The Intimidators (4-5 second half, 28-51 overall) lost their third straight.
