WINGATE — Trevor Atwood bounced a single over a drawn-in infield this afternoon to knock in the winning run and give the Rowan County American Legion baseball team its second state championship in a row.
Rowan County topped host Union County to win the game 3-2 and claim the North Carolina title.
The teams entered the ninth inning tied 1-1. Union County scored in the top of the inning, setting up the dramatic finish in the bottom of the frame.
Juan Garcia belted his first home run of the season for Rowan County to tie the game at 2-2, and Atwood delivered the walk-off win a couple of batters later.
Rowan County will next head to the Southeast Regional American Legion Tournament in Asheboro. Read Wednesday’s Salisbury Post for more on the state championship win.
