Area Sports Briefs: Rowan County Legion starts regional play

The Rowan County American Legion baseball team finally returns to action today.
Rowan (33-11) plays in the Southeast Regional against Columbia (34-6), the Tennessee champs. The game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Asheboro’s McCrary Park.
John Owen (5-1) is expected to pitch for Rowan.
The tournament runs through Aug. 7 with the winner moving on to the World Series in Shelby.
Tournament passes are $40.

Wednesday’s games
Game 1 — Covington, Georgia vs. Florence, S.C., 9:30
Game 2 — Wheeling, West Virginia vs. Tallahassee, Florida, 12:30
Game 3 — Rowan County vs. Columbia, Tennessee, 4:30
Game 4 — Troy, Alabama vs. Randolph County, 7:30

College football
The South Atlantic Conference announced preseason all-conference first team and second team players on Tuesday.
Catawba’s first-teamers are all on defense: linebackers Kyle Kitchens and Jamal Lackey, defensive lineman C.J. Barksdale and cornerback Case Woodard.
Second-teamers are QB Mike Sheehan, running back David Burgess, receiver Keyon West, long snapper Steven Bartlett and DB Chris Carpenter.

North Carolina A&T offensive lineman Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) was named as a HBCU preseason All-American by BOXTOROW.

Prep swimming
Salisbury High’s Ethan Knorr is training with the GCY Makos, out of the Greensboro Community YMCA.
He trains under head coach Brad Herndon.
Ethan competed in the Long Course YMCA Nationals in Indianapolis on July 27-31.
He had qualifying times for eight individual events and swam the maximum fourevents.
He made finals in twoevents, finishing top 24, a huge accomplishment for a 15-year-old.
He placed 19th in the 400 meter IM with a time of 4:46.54.
He placed 24th in the 200 meter backstroke with a time of 2:12.92.
Knorr’s other two events, the 400 freestyle, with a time of 4:19.81, and the 200 meter butterfly, 2:15.02 were season-best times.
Knorr is planning to continue to swim for the SHS Hornets this winter and trains 16-plus hours a week.

Intimidators lose
KANNAPOLIS — Cesar Diaz hit a two-run single in the second inning, leading the Charleston RiverDogs to a 5-1 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Tuesday.
The single by Diaz scored Luis Torrens and Mandy Alvarez to give the RiverDogs a 2-1 lead.
The RiverDogs later added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to secure the victory.
Charleston right-hander Luis Cedeno (7-5) picked up the win after allowing one run on just three hits over five innings. Opposing starter Luis Martinez (5-8) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

Sands homers
GWINNETT, Ga. — Former Catawba star Jerry Sands homered and had three hits, and Anthony Ranaudo allowed just five hits over seven innings as the Charlotte Knights beat the Gwinnett Braves 3-0 on Tuesday.
In the top of the first, Charlotte grabbed the lead on a single by Kevan Smith that scored Jake Peter. The Knights then added single runs in the second and third innings. In the second, Sands hit a solo home run, while Smith hit an RBI single in the third.
Matt Wisler (0-1) went eight innings, allowing three runs and seven hits while striking out six in the International League game. Brad Goldberg retired the side in order for his seventh save of the season.
The Braves were held scoreless for the 14th time this season, while the Knights’ staff recorded their fifth shutout of the year.

Mudcats top Dash
ZEBULON— Sal Giardina scored on an error in the second inning to help the Carolina Mudcats secure a 5-1 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash on Tuesday.
After Carolina added two runs in the fourth, the Dash cut into the deficit in the fifth inning when Mason Robbins hit an RBI double, scoring Cleuluis Rondon.
Carlos Salazar (2-4) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief while Winston-Salem starter Zach Thompson (2-2) took the loss in the Carolina League game.

Brooks wins
FREDERICK, Md. — Jeffrey Baez hit a two-run single in the top of the 13th inning to help lead the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 5-4 win over the Frederick Keys on Tuesday.
Daniel Spingola homered and singled in the win.
Former Catawba star Craig Brooks (2-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while Ivan Hernandez (2-1) took the loss in the Carolina League game.

Local golf
Sixty-two GARS members played a Captain’s Choice at Corbin Hills.
The first-place team with a minus-12 consisted of David Adams, Larry Fowler, Bob Niekras and Johnny Shook.
Two teams finished at minus-11. The team of John Goodman, Andy Griffin and Carrol Downey won a scorecard for second over the team of Norman Schenk, Floyd McVey, Ben Moore and Linn Safley.
The first-place handicap team with a minus- 16 was Schenk, McVey, Moore and Safley.
Closest to the pin winner was Safley. Longest putt on No. 9 was made by Mick Rowell.
Corbin Hills
The Corbin Hills ladies participated in their annual match play event on Tuesday.
The winning team was the Red Team consisting of Beth Calhoun, Phyllis Durland, Susan Morris, Toni Iossi, Susan Houston, Susan Wydner, Faye Cline, Bev Cobb, Monica Green and Joy Maughmer.
