Childress, Chavis compete in Izod AJGA Championship

KANNAPOLIS — Salisbury’s Michael Childress is tied for 15th place after two rounds of the Izod AJGA Championship at The Club at Irish Creek.

Childress, a rising junior at Cannon School, has posted back-to-back 72s during the event, which includes a field of 63 outstanding junior golfers from around the region and country.

Parker Chavis, a rising senior at South Rowan High School, shot a bogey-free 69 on Wednesday, a round that saw two birdies. However, Chavis is tied for 56th place after a tough first-round 83 on Tuesday.

Fulton Smith of Pinehurst leads the tournament, firing an 8-under par 63 on Tuesday. He was 3-under through 14 holes on Wednesday when play was stopped for weather issues.

Viraj Garewal of Raleigh and Akshay Bhatia of Wake Forest, just a high school freshman, follow Smith. Each are sitting at 136 (67-69), tied for second place.

Concord’s Stephen Carroll is tied for 53rd place after scores of 73 and 78.

The tournament concludes today at Irish Creek.
