Area Sports Briefs: West tennis wins fifth straight

West Rowan’s girls tennis team won, 9-0, at Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.
West is 5-0 and is off to a 2-0 start in the SPC.
Payton Holt won 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 against Analese Travina.
Mackenzie Koontz defeated Phoebe Florian, 6-1, 6-2. Amber White defeated Bailey Wilcher, 6-1, 6-2 Skylar Jahnke defeated Carter Wiseman, 6-2, 6-1. Madison Smith defeated Madison Darrell, 6-0, 6-0. Mira White defeated Rachel Guadarrama, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Holt/Koontz defeated Travina/Florian 10-0. White/Abby Johnson defeated Wilcher/Wiseman 10-2. Jahnke-White defeated Darrell-Guadarrama 10-0.
West Rowan is at South Rowan on Wednesday.

Salisbury’s girls tennis team won, 9-0, against Thomasville in CCC action on Monday.
Winning for the Hornets in singles were Maria Capito (6-0 6-1), Skye Mowery (6-2 6-1), Bethanie Stauffer (6-0 6-0), Rachel Seifert (6-1 6-0) and Rainey Dunham (6-0 6-0). Ruth Clement won by forfeit.
In doubles, Capito/Clement and Mowery/Seifert won 8-0, and No. 3 doubles was a forfeit.
Salisbury is 5-1 and 3-0 in the CCC. The Hornets have won 149 straight CCC matches and play at West Davidson on Wednesday.

East Rowan and Carson will finish a suspended match today, with East leading, 4-3.
Prep soccer
Salisbury improved to 6-2-2 with a 4-1 victory over West Rowan on Monday at Ludwig Stadium.
Andrew Kalogeromitros scored twice for the Hornets. Jesus Sanchez, and Brandon Ibanez had a goal each. Assists were credited to Bryan Cortez (two) and Kalogeromitros.
Salisbury also got excellent play from Luke Hutton and Brody Dillon.
“West Rowan has talented players, and this was a highly contested match that we were fortunate to win,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.
Leo Guzman scored for the Falcons. Cristyan Cabrera assisted.
Salisbury is at Randleman tonight at 6 p.m.

East Rowan’s soccer team defeated North Stanly, 6-1, on Monday in a non-conference match.
Alex Kalogeromitros opened the scoring with a goal 18 seconds into the match. He also had an assist. Luis Heitz had a goal and two assists.
Will Peeler, Kevin Ochoa, Peyton Lambert and James Lomax had a goal, with Kalogeromitros, Ochoa and Landon Ketchie adding an assist. David Burleyson had 14 saves and earned the win in goal.
Prep golf
Hickory Ridge won Monday’s SPC match at the Club at Irish Creek.
The Bulls shot 129. Cox Mill (138), Carson (145), Concord (151), East Rowan (153), Robinson (164), Central Cabarrus (165), West Rowan (176) and South Rowan (179) followed.
Hickory Ridge’s Maddie Hayes shot 36 and was medalist. Carson’s Micah Furr was second with a 39.
Carmen Fraley shot 47 to lead East Rowan.
Prep volleyball
Reagan topped Carson, 20-25, 25-15, 25-14 and 29-27 on Monday. It was the first loss for the Cougars (9-1). Reagan is 10-0.

McCanless Couples
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The winning team was Ricky Honeycutt, Harry Owen and Lexie Miller. The team of Davie Huneycutt and Walt & Kim Kincaid took second. Honeycutt won longest putt.
Punt, Pass and Kick
Salisbury Parks and Recreation will host a Local Punt, Pass and Kick competition on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m. at Catawba’s Shuford Stadium.
The free event is for boys and girls, ages 6-15. They will compete separately. No football shoes, cleats, turf shoes or bare feet are allowed. Register at www.nflppk.com or on the 18th. For information, call 704-638-5289.

Catawba’s women are sixth after Monday’s first round of the Anderson Invitational.

UNC Pembroke’s Alexandria Bare (South Rowan) shot 80 in the first round of the Full Moon Invitational in Alabama.

Catawba’s men shot 295 for a seven-shot lead after the first-round of the Anderson Invitational.
Freshman Mac Sheppard (Hickory Ridge) shot a 4-under 68 to hold the individual lead. Sophomore Trey Burton followed with a 74 and junior Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) turned in a 75.
College soccer
Pfeiffer senior forward Nathan Regis was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week.
Regis scored three goals in two matches, a win against Palm Beach Atlantic, and a 2-1 loss to Lynn that ended the Falcons’ 28-game winning streak.

Former Livingstone running back Anthony Green (Florence, S.C.) signed a contract to play pro football in Turkey.
He’ll start in January with the Mersin Mustangs.
Fishing
Jeremy Talbert of Albemarle weighed a five-bass limit totaling 13 pounds, 2 ounces, on Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Piedmont Division Super Tournament on High Rock Lake, with a two-day total of 10 bass and 30 pounds, 8 ounces. For his boating win, Talbert took home $4,457.
Salisbury’s Thomas Ludwick was second with nine bass weighing 27 pounds and won $2,128.
Salisbury’s Tommy Jones was fifth with nine bass, weighing 25 pounds, 4 ounces, and won $951.
Salisbury’s Rodney Bell was ninth with eight bass, weighing 19 pounds, 13 ounces, and won $568.
Frank White of Marion won the co-angler division and earned $2,129 with a two-day cumulative catch of five bass weighing 14 pounds even.
