SALISBURY — A Salisbury woman faces a felony charge after she was accused of stealing over $1,000 worth of men’s clothing and perfume from Belk.
Salisbury Police charged Melanie Janine Leach, 52, of the 400 block of S. Long Street, with felony larceny. The incident occurred Sunday just before 6:30 p.m. when the store’s loss prevention officer approached the woman.
She was located by police near Los Arcos restaurant. She was confronted and had a Belk bag filled with clothes. She dropped the bag and started to walk away.
“She said, ‘You can have your stuff back,’ ” said Police Capt. Shelia Lingle.
She walked toward a vehicle that then took off, police said.
Leach continued walking away with her purse. Police stopped her and searched the purse. Inside the purse the officer found several items including Versace and Michael Kors perfume. The bag of clothes had Polo and Izod shirts inside.
Lingle said the stolen items were worth $1,061.
Leach remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $2,500 secured bond.
