Jeff Long: When it feels as though God has left

Sometimes when we feel lost or lonely, we lose our faith. Why? We feel as though God has left us when in reality, we have left Him. This is a hard concept to grasp when we as humans tend to search for something else to comfort us in our times of hurt and despair. For me it was the comfort of a woman or something to alter my thinking. This takes something away from reality when we start living a fantasy life.

Job felt this solidarity as stated in Job 3:3, “Let the day perish wherein I was born and the night in which it was said there is a man-child conceived.” Job did not even want to be born into the pain he was suffering without even knowing why.

We most of the time, suffer knowing the reason but trying to camouflage the reality and find another way out. Remember the promise of God through Paul’s writings in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” This is a promise from our Creator that if we are willing to follow His Word, the Holy Bible, we will endure. Sure there will be pain and suffering but the end result is victorious.

Even John the Baptist was in need of reassurance in Matthew 11:2-6, “Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples and said unto Him, art Thou He that should come or do we look for Another? Jesus answered and said unto them “Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see; the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, and the leapers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached unto them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in Me.” John, I believe was alone in prison and wondering, if Jesus was truly the Messiah, then why was he, Jesus’ friend, being put through this torment? He knew that there was a Messiah coming but seemed to need a confirmation if Jesus was the One.

We also question this when we stray away from God and look for other answers. The only answers we usually find are usually more puzzling questions. God’s guidance is the only true path to happiness; maybe not instantaneous, but always true in the long run.

First you have to be right with God. Trust in the crucifixion and the resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. Admit you are a sinner and need his guidance through the Holy Spirit, fellowship with Him through prayer and His Word. Then you too can be like Job and John the Baptist, believers. You can know that just as they did, it’s all right to question God, just don’t think you’ll always get the answers you want. Also remember, you just need to follow His guidance, not always understanding the path it puts you on. Finally the reward is the prepaid inheritance for all His children, Heaven. God bless all.
