SALISBURY — A Salisbury man was seriously injured Wednesday and faces driving-while-impaired charges after he crashed the garbage truck he was driving.

Daryl Clark, 47, was thrown from the truck and remains at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was the only one involved in the single-vehicle crash. The crash occurred around 1:15 p.m. at 222 Providence Church Road.

Sgt. G.A. Barger said Clark will also be charged with reckless driving and not wearing a seat belt.

Clark was traveling south on Providence Church Road when he ran off the road to the right, lost control, fishtailed and ran off the road again. The truck overturned and Clark was ejected.

The force of the crash tore the truck apart, Barger said.

He said essentially Clark was traveling too fast down the hill when he ran off the road. Clark was likely traveling over the posted speed limit.

Barger said initially they believed someone else was injured because Clark kept yelling for his wife, but troopers quickly realized she was not there at the scene.

He said Clark had no feeling, while at the scene, from the waist down.

Barger advises motorists traveling this holiday season to not drink and drive. If someone does drink, Barger said, they should find a designated driver or stay at home.

He also suggested those who have not been drinking should pay careful attention to the roadways.

“Just because you are following the rules of the road doesn’t mean someone is,” he said.

Trooper J.B. Applewhite investigated the crash.
