Sara A. Hill provided this photograph of the softball team fielded by China Grove Cotton Mill in 1940. Sara’s father, Russell Fred Anthony, is standing in the second row, third from the left. He was the team shortstop, and his dad (Sara’s grandfather) sold soft drinks at the concession stand. Sara remembers how she and friend Barbara Wilson sometimes played in the outfield with her father, and how the games were a fun part of her childhood.
