EAST SPENCER — East Spencer Police Chief Sharon Hovis said Monday that a weekend shooting death was the result of a domestic incident.
The East Spencer Police Department and other law enforcement agencies continued to investigate the killing of 26-year-old Antonio Rushawn Lee, who was shot to death Sunday morning at the Grant Street Apartments complex. The Post reported his name incorrectly in Monday’s paper.
Hovis said police have interviewed a suspect but have not made an arrest.
According to the chief, an argument started in Apartment 30 between Lee and the suspect, and Lee was shot once in the head.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are helping in the investigation.
Hovis said she could not say whether a gun was recovered at the scene. She was unable to provide further details.
The Rowan County 911 communications center received a report of shots fired in the area of Grant Street Apartments about 9:20 a.m. Sunday. The East Spencer Police Department, Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and Spencer Police Department responded.
Hovis told a Post reporter that officers found Lee between Building No. 27 and Building No. 30, where the shooting occurred. The chief said there were plenty of witnesses at the scene.
She confirmed Monday that there were others inside the apartment when the shooting occurred. Alcohol was involved in the incident, Hovis said.
This is the fifth killing in the county this year. There were 15 killings in 2016, two of which were ruled not homicides.
Family friend Rickeshia Coleman said Lee was a nice guy who would help anyone who asked. She said she had known Lee for quite a while.
“He will be truly missed by a lot of people,” Coleman said.
