STATESVILLE — Iredell County authorities say a 20-year-old woman has been charged with felony child abuse after her 10-week-old child was discovered with a broken arm and other broken bones that were in various stages of healing.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office charged Kayla Marie Horne, of Cedar Brook Drive, Kannapolis, with felony child abuse inflicting serious physical injury.
Sheriff Darren Campbell said the incidents are believed to have occurred between May 17 and Aug. 2.
The child was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center by family members. Medical staff at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center notified the Iredell County Department of Social Services as well as the Sheriff’s Office.
The report was assigned to Detective Sgt. Amy Dyson of the Special Victims Unit.
Because of the extent of the child’s injuries, the child was transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center. Upon further evaluation, the child was found to have a fractured arm, a healing fracture on the other arm, and three healing rib fractures.
Several witnesses were identified and interviewed.
Horne was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center, where she was issued a $125,000 secure bond.
