Area Sports Briefs: Injured Adams may miss season

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie outside linebacker Keion Adams (Salisbury) injured his left shoulder during the team’s eighth practice and is likely to miss the entire season.

Adams is expected to be placed on injured reserve  soon by the team.

Adams was doing well in camp and was battling Arthur Moats for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Pittsburgh defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) entered the NFL’s concussion protocol  Monday after being injured in last Sunday’s game.

Hargrave apparently didn’t sustain a concussion, but he showed symptoms  of a possible concussion and was placed in the protocol as a precaution.

Hargrave went through the  concussion protocol twice last season, suffering head injuries in December and January.

Local golf

The team of Jared Barnette-Justin Lefler shot 65 on Saturday at the Country Club of Salisbury and took over the lead in qualifying for the men’s open championship.

Qualifying concludes today. All scores are in today’s Scoreboard.

Two local golfers are playing in the 15th Joe Cheves Junior Invitational  at Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton.

Salisbury’s Michael Childress is tied for 17th place after firing a first-round 1-under par 71. Childress, a senior at Cannon School in Concord and a University of Richmond commit, had four birdies on the day.

Charlie Barr, also of Salisbury and Childress’ teammate as a freshman at Cannon, struggled to a 5-over par 77 on Saturday. He is tied for 63rd place. Barr carded three birdies but two double bogeys hurt his round.

Childress and Barr are playing together in next weekend’s Crowder-Dorsett Labor Day tournament at the Country Club of Salisbury. They qualified on Friday with a 68.

The event, featuring 81 of the best junior golfers in the area, concludes with today’s second round. Akshay Bhatia, of Wake Forest, N.C., leads the tournament after Saturday’s 7-under 65.

Lexington’s Emily Hawkins is tied for second place in the girls’ tournament. She shot a 2-under par 70 and trails Rachel Kuehn, of Asheville, by two strokes.

Prep volleyball

Carson won twice on Saturday, routing Lake Norman 25-10, 25-7 and 25-3 and coming back to beat West Iredell 12-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-19 and 15-10.

Mallory Weast had nine kills against Lake Norman, while Lindsay Elmore and Jaden Vaughn had eight each.

Weast had 19 kills and 29 digs against West Iredell. Elmore had 16 kills and three blocks. Vaughn had nine kills. Kary Hales had 36 digs.

Prep cross country

Carson’s girls placed eighth in Saturday’s Providence Invitational at McAlpine Greenway.

Taylor Conrad ran 20:40 and was 12th. Olivia Gabriel ran 23:52 and was the second-fastest Cougar. She  was 51st.

Carson didn’t have one of its top two runners, Taylor Wiggins.

East Rowan’s girls placed 18th. Grace Faller led the Mustangs. She ran 23:58.

East Rowan’s boys were sixth. Sean Incardona (14th, 17:28), Ross Alexander (28th, 18:01) and Chase Whitley (34th, 18:14) led the Mustangs.

Carson was 16th. Zac Barbee led the Cougars. He ran 18:20 and was 41st.

Intimidators

Zach Remillard’s three-run homer in the eighth lifted the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 7-2 win against Lakewood on Saturday at Intimidators Stadium.

College volleyball

Michaela White (Carson) had 20 assists and 17 digs for UNC Wilmington in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Appalachian State.

College football

St. Andrews’ Kacey Otto (West Rowan) rushed nine times for 21 yards in  a 43-7 loss to Lindsey and completed a pass for 8 yards. It was the first game for St. Andrews.
