Letter: ‘A ‘Bury Home Companion’ brought joy and beauty

Reporter Andie Foley and photographer Wayne Hinshaw superbly conveyed Saturday night’s performance of “A ‘Bury Home Companion” (Monday’s Salisbury Post) for those who were unfortunate enough to have missed this amazing production.

Kent Bernhardt’s script was sheer brilliance, and he himself captured the tone and cadences of Garrison Keillor’s voice so convincingly that many of us were taken back to earlier days of radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”

The variety and quantity of musical talent and comic performances beggar description. From bluegrass to operatic voices, from youthful fiddlers to seasoned guitarists, from clever comic skits to “commercials” based on local institutions, the program kept the audience constantly entertained and responding with prolonged applause and standing ovations.

My favorite moment in the program was near the end of Kent’s Garrison Keillor-style monologue, when he drew attention to the hope of achieving a more harmonious society. It reminded me that even in the midst of societal strife and turmoil, we have writers, musicians, artists and performers who bring to us the joy and beauty of being human.

Kudos to David Hagy, Linda Jones, James Harvey, the Symphony Board, the Symphony Guild, and all who were involved in this spectacular fund-raiser for the Salisbury Symphony. May the Symphony’s next 50 years be as successful as the first 50 were!
