SALISBURY — Stephanie Hall pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, second-degree arson and common law robbery Monday in the 2016 killing of Amanda Smith.
Hall has not yet been sentenced. The court accepted her plea deal on the condition that she testify in future hearings against her boyfriend and co-defendant, Timothy Smith. She cannot be sentenced until she fulfills that condition.
If she that condition is met, Hall will get a reduced sentence.
During her plea hearing, Hall also submitted a CD and one-page affidavit as evidence.
The CD contains an audio recording of remarks that Hall made June 21, 2016, on a drive with officers back from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Timothy Smith and Hall drove to Myrtle Beach just after Amanda Smith’s death.
Amanda Smith was found dead in the early morning of June 17, 2016, in the 3000 block of Leonard Road, according to a warrant filed at the time.
Prosecutor Greg Butler said Monday that Timothy Smith “violently” attacked and then strangled Amanda Smith.
Timothy Smith and Amanda Smith were not related, officials have said.
Timothy Smith and Hall decided to burn Amanda Smith’s body and trailer home in order to get rid of evidence.
Butler said Amanda Smith was likely already dead when the couple burned her body.
The couple also stole $150 from the trailer, he said.
Butler said Hall had been friends with Amanda Smith for several years and may have even stayed with her for a period of time.
Friends and family of Amanda Smith filled two rows in the courtroom during Hall’s plea hearing Monday. When the hearing ended, they filed out together. Some were crying in the lobby just after they left the courtroom.
Timothy Smith’s next court date has not been set.
