Spencer planning board to hold public forums

SPENCER — The town Planning Board will consider changes and updates to the sign ordinance.

The board will hold two public forums to hear from anyone affected by signs such as businesses, churches, residents, nonprofit groups, education institutions, industry, sports groups, and others.

Community forums are scheduled at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 and Oct. 9 at the Spencer municipal building, 600 S. Salisbury Ave.

The format is designed so that anyone who wishes to speak will have the opportunity. Each speaker will have three minutes to talk about signage. Anyone present will get a second opportunity to speak after others are finished.

The board members will not debate or interject comments unless they need to ask clarifying questions. Board members will have notepads, pens and laptops to document the needs and concerns expressed.

The Planning Board chairman will appoint two committees on Sept. 21 to begin a review of the ordinance.

The first committee will review a proposed sign ordinance for relevance and compatibility with the town staff. The second committee will review the current sign ordinance to determine which parts should be kept in the future sign ordinance.

Each committee will include planning board members and at least two business owners or managers, two church representatives and two residents.

Those interested in joining one of the committees or who have more questions should contact Troy D. Powell, director of land management, at 704-633-2231, Ext. 28, or at LMDDIR@ci.spencer.nc.us.
