2016 RECORDS: Livingstone, 2-8. Hampton, 5-6.
LAST WEEK: Livingstone lost at Kentucky Wesleyan, 33-13; Hampton defeated Delaware State, 28-15.
COACHES: Livingstone — Daryl Williams’ record is 15-26, in his fifth season. Four seasons prior to Williams taking over, the Blue Bears were 2-38, so has brought progress to Livingstone. Hampton — Connell Maynor is in his fourth year, with a record 15-21. Prior to coming to Hampton, Maynor was at Winston-Salem State, coaching the Rams to a 45-6 overall record (29-2 in the CIAA). Under Maynor, WSSU was the 2012 national runner-up, losing in the Division II championship game.
SERIES: Hampton leads the series, 9-0, and the two schools have not met since 1994, a 47-7 win for the Pirates. The first game was in 1909 and the Pirates’ largest victory was 44-0 in 1931.
KEY PLAYERS: Livingstone — Quarterback Thaddeus Bell, a sophomore, played well last week, completing 25 of 37 passes for 167 yards and no interceptions. Bell was also the team’s leading rusher with 41 yards.
“Thad is coming along,” added Williams. “He doesn’t know yet how good he can be. Thad can be a great athlete at the quarterback position. He’s finally buying in. He came by last week and we just sat and talked about playing the position.”
Bell, a 6-2, 220-pounder, set some records at quarterback for Duluth (Ga.) High School and attended Georgia Prep Sports Academy before enrolling at Livingstone last year.
“I feel more comfortable than last year,” said Bell. “I feel that I’ve cut down on my mistakes, and I know better now when to ‘eat it’ and when to try to make a play. But I know that I can still get better, take some coaching and stop making plays out of the system, every now and then.”
A newcomer at running back, Art’Kevious Nelson, gained 65 yards before losses and had a pair of 6-yard scoring runs.
Defensive tackles Armond Cox and linebacker Marcus Fairly lead the Blue Bears in tackles with nine and eight, respectively. Fairly has only played in one game.
Hampton — QB Delmon Williams, a 6-2 junior transfer, completed 16 of 25 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns, last week against Delaware State. The Pirates can run the ball as well — back Yahkee Johnson picked up 86 yards on 18 carries and a TD.
Wide receiver Aulden Knight was the Pirates’ top receiver last week, catching four balls for 172 yards and two scores. One of the touchdowns went for 78 yards.
On defense, linebacker Steve Smith had 11 tackles against Delaware State, including 3 1/2 for losses.
Two former West Rowan Falcons play for Hampton on the offensive line — Derrick Moreland and Keldrick Wilson, both sophomores. Moreland played on the defensive line last year but has moved to offense.
NEXT WEEK: Livingstone plays its first CIAA contest at Chowan (6 p.m.).
