Everything’s bigger in Texas
After partner opens 1NT and you have a 6 card major with more than 8 HCP what can you do? Of course you can transfer as always but there is a way to more definitely describe your hand.
Here’s where Texas comes in. You know you want to play in at least game so you make a jump transfer bid: 4 Diamonds for Hearts or 4 Hearts for Spades. After partner accepts your transfer you pass with just game going points. But suppose you hold 15-17 points as well. You would then proceed to Blackwood to explore slam possibilities.
Many experienced players, however, only use Texas transfers to explore for Slam and regular Jacoby transfers if they don’t have enough strength to insist on slam. They leave that decision to their partner who opened the NT.
