Letter: Are bus stops safe?

When parents send their children off to school, they expect the school will protect and keep the students safe. But what if one of the most dangerous places for students is their bus stop?
Many students in the Rowan-Salisbury school system have bus stops right at their driveway by their houses, but there are some of us like myself who walk to our bus stops down public roads with cars flying in and out of the roads with no concern for our safety.
In fact, a year ago as my neighbor and I were walking home we were almost hit by a car, but when we reported it to the school system and requested that the stop be moved, citing the dangers, we were told that there was no danger, it was perfectly safe, and the stop wouldn’t be moved.
It seems common sense to me to move the stop to a safer place like our driveway as other students are afforded; however, the people who can change the stop don’t share the same sentiments as I do. Why put students’ lives in jeopardy if you don’t have to?
