Doug Creamer: Doing our job

I remembered calling Charles on several occasions, needing help with something at the house. He was never too busy to talk and help us find the right person to do the job. I also remember him calling me because he wanted to know if I could help him find something in the scriptures. He even invited me to speak at his church one Sunday.
He sent a few emails telling me how much he enjoyed certain columns I wrote. Faith and family were important to him. Charles carried his faith outside the church to the community he lived in, and to those in his path who found themselves in need. He carried himself in a professional and godly way.
I have been thinking about him since the other day. How many of us live in such a way that people know we are Christians? Do we live one life at church and another in our workplace? How do we treat our family and friends? Do our values and actions reflect our love for God?
I believe God needs people in every profession who will live for Him. Wouldn’t you like to believe that your doctor prayed and read God’s word before examining you? Wouldn’t you hope that your accountant is an honest man or woman of God? I sure hope that if an EMS worker has to come to my aid, they will pray as they treat me.
Construction workers don’t have godly reputations, but God needs people who believe and trust in Him to work in that field. Many used car sales people have cheated their customers; wouldn’t you like to find a godly person who treats you fairly? There are some bad movies promoting ungodly behavior, but isn’t it refreshing when godly folks come together to produce a quality Christian movie like “War Room?”
Parents entrust their children to the public schools. They hope their kids get the best teachers and coaches. In my thirty-plus years in the classroom, I have discovered that most teachers have faith in a loving God. They know how important it is to raise up the next generation with a strong foundation on good values.
God needs good people in every profession who will bring His presence with then to work every day. Imagine if our government leaders got on their knees every day asking God to give them wisdom as they made decisions for our country. God needs each one of us to shine like stars wherever He has us so we can bring hope to the lost and dying.
Jesus showed us that He could use anybody. James and John were known brawlers and possibly drunkards. Look at all the mistakes Peter made in his life and yet how powerfully God used him. Matthew was a tax collector, one of the lowest members of society at that time, yet God used him. Paul approved of killing Christians and God chose to use him to write most of our New Testament. I understand it was Jesus himself who helped to transform those lives, but who is to say that God might be able to use you and me to do the same kind of work in other people?
Helping other people see God’s goodness through us can change people’s eternal destiny. I believe God needs each one of us to give our best in our work in hopes that people will sit up and notice our witness. I imagine Paul was an awesome tent maker who stood behind his product. Could people say the same thing about you and me in the way we do our jobs? Do we represent God to the people we meet and serve? Is our work of such quality that people sit up and take notice?
I want to encourage you to consider your workplace a mission field. Consider your co-workers who are lost as opportunities to share God’s love. Work hard to be the best at your job so your employer is glad you work there. Raise the standard in your workplace and be a source of hope and love. Be the one that others are drawn to for prayer because they find your faith as a source of strength. God needs our lights to shine for Him.
