Area Sports Briefs: Carson’s Hairston commits

Carson senior Jamarius Hairston announced a commitment to Division II Lander’s basketball program on Sunday via social media. Lander is in Greenwood, S.C., and competes in the Peach Belt Conference.
The 6-foot-4 Hairston is enjoying a phenomenal senior season and is averaging 20.7 points per game.
He’s broken the Carson single-season scoring record this season with 577 points.
A four-year starter. Hairston is the No. 2 scorer all-time at Carson with 1,641 points.
Fourth-seeded Carson (26-2) is set to take on top-seeded Cox Mill in the fourth round of the 3A state playoffs on Tuesday. Tip is 7 p.m. Cox Mill hosts.
Cox Mill features UNC signee Leaky Black and Wendell Moore, one of the country’s top juniors.
Eight teams are left in 3A, four in the West and four in the East.

Salisbury’s boys (26-3) also are in action on Tuesday in the fourth round of the 2A state playoffs.
The fourth-seeded Hornets will tip at 7:30 p.m. at top-seeded Burnsville Mountain Heritage.
That’s a doubleheader with the Mountain Heritage girls playing in the first game at 6 p.m. against Wilkes Central. Admission is $9.

In the 1A ranks, fifth-seeded North Stanly travels to No. 1 Winston-Salem Prep on Tuesday.

Local golf
MURRELLS INLET, S.C. — Michael Childress of Salisbury shot a 77 on Sunday, finishing tied for 18th place in the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship at TPC Myrtle Beach.
Childress, one of 10 golfers from North Carolina in the 65-player field, carded a 75, 74 and 77 during the three-day event, for a total score of 10-over par 226. Childress is a senior at Cannon School in Concord and has signed to play at the University of Richmond.
Childress finished 10 strokes behind champion Michael Brennan, a high school sophomore from Leesburg, Va. Brennan was the only golfer at par for the tournament with a 216 (72-71-73).
Lansdon Robbins, of Davidson, Childress’ teammate at Cannon and a UNC-Wilmington commit, tied for 7th at 223 (74-75-74). Another teammate, Narayan Mohan, a freshman at Cannon, tied for 31st at 229.
Alexa Pano, an eighth-grader of Lake Worth, Fla., won the girls’ championship, shooting 218 (68-76-74), a comfortable four-stroke victory over Ashley Menne, of Surprise, Ariz.
College basketball
Catawba’s women are seeded fifth in the SAC tournament and play at No. 4 Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Livingstone men play on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. against Fayetteville State at Bojangles Coliseum in the first round of the CIAA tourney.

College softball
Catawba’s softball team had been hot, but the Indians lost twice to visiting Young Harris on Sunday.
In a 9-3 loss, Delane Smith hit her third homer of the season.
Allie Baker had two hits. Baker and Taylor Martin had RBIs.
Madison Hunter (4-1) lost for the first time.

In the second game, Catawba (8-5) lost 7-2.
Brooke Walser pitched a complete game but took the loss.
Baker and Carlee Brawley drove in runs. Leah Huggins had two of Catawba’s five hits.
