Letter: Try volunteering in schools

Editor’s note: The writer is responding to Monday’s letter by Wayne Drye, “Teachers have a pretty good gig.”
Mr Drye, after perusing your article, I was not sure if I should laugh or cry at your display of wrong information.
So just to name a few:
1. The quotes you have for teachers’ salaries are so totally wrong.
2. You do not hear people complaining about their jobs? That is remarkable, or you just do not listen ( my guess).
3. Every weekend off? Well, yes, since teachers do not physically report to their schools. And no since that is when teachers grade students’ work, plan their week to meet students’ needs, .answer parents’ e-mails. Shall I go on ?
So, I think you should either volunteer or sub in a school — but let me laugh because my guess is you would not last very long under those ideal classroom conditions you pretend surround teachers.
Because you are so misinformed, yes, you are bashing teachers.
One more thing, there is no teachers’ union in North Carolina.
Just so you know, your letter is an insult to all teachers. And I must mention I am a retired teacher still teaching part-time (by choice) because most teachers love their career, their students and are deserving of much better support instead of misinformed bashing.
