STATESVILLE — A Mooresville teen was charged on Wednesday with assaulting a detention center officer while the officer was on rounds.
Hayden Nathaniel Roland, 16, of 120 Rock Loop Road, Mooresville, was charged with one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and felony possession of a weapon by a prisoner.
When Corporal W. Moreland, who is assigned to the Iredell County Detention Center, called for Roland’s cell door to be opened, the teen charged at the officer. Roland struck Moreland in the upper chest area with the makeshift knife.
The teen altered his prescription reading glasses into a sharp object. Moreland did not sustain any injuries and was able to subdue Roland and prevent him from injuring anyone else, according to officials.
Detective C. Lamberth of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division (CID) was called to investigate this incident.
Magistrate P. Tutterrow issued a $250,000 secured bond for these charges. Roland was originally being held on a misdemeanor damage to property charge under a $1,000 secured bond.
