SALISBURY — Salisbury Police officials say a man who robbed First National Bank on East Innes Street led police on a vehicle chase to Thomasville and stabbed a person trying to stop him. The suspect was shot by police.

The robbery occurred today at 12:32 p.m. when a man entered the bank, located at 322 E. Innes St., and took an undisclosed amount of money. Officers were able to find the suspect’s vehicle and were engaged in a multi-jurisdictional vehicle pursuit. The chase led them to Mendenhall Street in Thomasville.

Once the vehicle turned onto Mendenhall Street, the driver left the vehicle and attempted to run into Anderson RC Hobby Shop, located at 1101 Mendenhall St.

A citizen tried to stop the suspect from entering the store. The suspect then stabbed the citizen multiple times. The officers confronted the suspect and more than one officer used a Taser to take the suspect into custody.

The Tasers proved ineffective, officials said.

The suspect, still holding the knife, was shot by a Salisbury Police officer. An additional suspect is being treated at a hospital for an unrelated medical issue.

The identity of the suspect shot is being verified, officials said.

In addition to the Salisbury Police Department, the incident also involved assistance from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Thomasville Police Department.
