Yesterday: a short-lived semipro team from China Grove, circa 1935

Not much is known of this baseball team pictured above, the China Grove Chinamen, except maybe it’s politically incorrect name. Dr. Randy Lassiter reports it was a short-lived semipro team, circa 1935, that folded after one year. Many of the players were absorbed into the Landis Spinners. Photographs and artifacts such as this will be part of ‘Batter Up: a Salute to Southern Rowan Baseball,’ which will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the China Grove Roller Mill, 308 N. Main St., China Grove. Sponsored by Rowan Museum Inc., the exhibit honors southern Rowan baseball and its players through the years. After Saturday’s event, the exhibit will be open alternating Saturdays at the roller mill into the fall.
