KANNAPOLIS — The DIY Network show “Salvage Dawgs” will feature Kannapolis’ downtown revitalization project at 9 p.m. Sunday.
The “Salvage Dawg” team recovered materials from the former K-Town Furniture & Transit Furniture buildings and others.
“Salvage Dawgs,” one of the top three shows on DIY, filmed the episode last fall. A second episode featuring Kannapolis is expected to air later this year.
The show’s premise is to salvage architectural and building materials that are going to be discarded and turn them into furniture, art or other useful items.
One of the show’s hosts, Mike Whiteside, is from Charlotte and is familiar with the history of Kannapolis, said Annette Privette Keller, Kannapolis director of communications.
“They contacted us after they saw the publicity about us buying our downtown and our plan to demolish a few buildings that are in really bad shape while remodeling others,” said Privette Keller. “This is their forte.”
Privette Keller said the show’s producers wanted to film an episode about the downtown revitalization project and preserve items that had no historical significance to the city.
“It is a great opportunity for us to have 30 minutes on prime-time television to tell our story,” said Privette Keller.
The crew salvaged items including the cupola from the old police headquarters and corbels from the former K-Town Furniture.
“We’re pleased that they are going to take these items and find a new life and new home for them,” said Privette Keller. “We look forward to seeing how they repurpose them.”
The cast of “Salvage Dawgs” will also discuss the trip to Kannapolis on Facebook Live at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
