SALISBURY — A China Grove man has been charged with felony sex offenses that happened more than 30 years ago with a boy who was 10 years old after the victim contacted the assailant on Facebook, authorities say.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged Robert Mickey Garrett, 52, of the 200 block of Westhaven Way, with first-degree statutory sex offense and felony indecent liberties with a child.

The victim, who is now in his 40s, contacted Garrett on Facebook. During a conversation about what happened, the victim said Garrett admitted the 1985 incident.

The victim reported the crime to Rowan County investigators in June and provided the statement he says Garrett made on the social media website.

A Sheriff’s Office report said Garrett would have been 20 years old at the time of the assault.

Authorities said the two lived close to each other at the time.

Garrett was issued a $10,000 secured bond and remains in the Rowan County Detention Center.
