SALISBURY — The Salisbury Police Department, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, will host public information sessions with the City Council on Aug. 14 to announce the findings of a recent police department assessment.

As part of the implementation of the recommendations, the report will be reviewed by the Office of Justice Programs’ diagnostic staff with the City Council at a public meeting at 10 a.m. in City Council Chambers at City Hall, 217 S. Main St.

The public will have an opportunity to review the report with the diagnostic center staff at 5:30 p.m. at the Salisbury Civic Center, 315 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

In 2017, the Police Department requested the assistance of the Office of Justice Programs to assess the department’s internal capabilities, violent crime trends and reduction strategies, and community engagement efforts.

Beginning in November, the diagnostic center staff spent several months reviewing the department’s crime reports and police call location data, conducted interviews with Police Department and law enforcement partner agency staff, and interviewed key members of the community — business owners, faith-based leaders and neighborhood representatives.

After gathering information, the diagnostic center staff developed a report on training and technical assistance to provide the Police Department a guide for improving the department and community response to violent crime.
