KANNAPOLIS — A thief took beer and wine from a local church and left behind lottery tickets and empty packages of candy containing a component found in marijuana.

A deputy with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary alarm just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to St. John the Baptizer Romanian Orthodox Church, 8228 Park Edwards Road.

The alarm indicated motion in a hallway.

The deputy found that a window screen had been torn at the back of the church. Several chairs were knocked over near the window.

A priest arrived and told the deputy that six Heineken beers and a bottle of wine were the only items missing.

The thief left behind a red Bic lighter, three lottery scratch-off tickets and two packages of CBD gummies found outside on the ground. CBD is cannabidiol, a compound found in marijuana or marijuana plants.
