SALISBURY — Swimmers honored Veterans Day with the annual community “Military Mile” swim to benefit the Family Readiness Group of the C1-131 Assault Helicopter Battalion on Nov. 10 at the J.F. Hurley Family YMCA.
The group assists military families when something needs to be repaired in the home while the member is deployed or training out of state.
They raised $1,032 for the program.
Families, kids, elderly adults, veterans and active service members swam a mile or more. Some of the swimmers included 5-year-old Laila Hicks and Navy veteran and Aquatics Director and Y swim team coach at East Rowan YMCA Sarah Zander.
Attendees cheered on the swimmers and counted laps from the deck.
Amy Epley, an Army veteran and swim team mom, passed out hot chocolate to participants as they got out of the water.
