CHINA GROVE — Officials have identified the school bus driver who died while transporting a group of China Grove Middle School students Monday morning as Harold Stefan Bodnar.

Bodnar, 80, of China Grove, had a heart attack before the crash, which occurred at the intersection of North Church and North Main streets. None of the children was injured, and all the students were taken safely to school.

After his retirement, which family member said didn’t last long, Bodnar became a school bus driver, most recently for China Grove Middle School and Carson High School.

A funeral for Bodnar, who was known to family and friends as Hez, was held Thursday.

He is survived by his wife, Judith; children and stepchildren; 24 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
