SALISBURY — Canterbury Book Club was started in 1973, and just five years later its members began a tradition of giving to others in the community during the holidays.
The club, which includes 12 local women, has continued in the giving spirit with its annual Christmas Happiness donation.
Barbara Perry and Carolyn Hurley came up with the British-sounding club name.
“We have been able to provide Christmas for our families, and we don’t want anyone to do without,” said Lynn Bertram, who has been club treasurer for 22 years.
The women choose a recently written book in various genres and meet during the fall, winter and spring.
Sometimes they meet for lunch at a member’s home or a local restaurant.
“It’s a wonderful fellowship,” Bertram said.
Contributions to the Christmas Happiness Fund may be delivered to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mailed to Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O.
