SALISBURY — It was a matter of survival for the East Rowan’s girls Saturday afternoon in the fifth-place game of the Dale’s/Sam Moir Christmas Classic.
Despite going scoreless in the final three minutes of the low-scoring game, the Mustangs held off Davie County, 31-30, to improve to 11-2.
The War Eagles (4-7) cut the score to the final margin with 15 seconds left on a baseline jumper by Lexie May, then had two chances to win it in the waning seconds, but could not convert.
East led, 27-21, early in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Grace Eagle, but were outscored, 9-4, the rest of the way. The final East basket came on a Mary Spry follow shot with 3:50 left.
East went to the weave to run the clock, but turned it over four times in the final minute. Davie missed a jumper just before the game-ending buzzer.
Spry led the Mustangs with 10 points, while Eagle and Caroline Houpe added seven each. Klara Lewis topped Davie with 11 points, while May added 10.
