10 to Watch in 2019: Rep. Ted Budd

Congressman Ted Budd, R-13, is no stranger to highly contested elections.

In 2016, the political newcomer rose above 16 other Republicans in a crowded primary. Redistricting had pulled the incumbent, Republican George Holding, into the 2nd District, causing a mad dash of both Democratic and Republican hopefuls for the empty 13th District seat.

Budd went on to defeat Democrat Bruce Davis in the 2016 general election by a 12.2-point margin, despite facing many experienced legislators on his journey to D.C.

Though district lines remained the same and Budd was unchallenged in the primary, another tough race awaited in 2018. On the general election ballot, he faced Libertarian Tom Bailey, Green Party member Robert Corriher and Democrat Kathy Manning.

Manning gave him his fiercest competition, building a significant cache of campaign cash in her first month on the trail. The 13th District race was on, with political analysts eyeing the seat as one with the potential to help Democrats regain control of Congress.

Democrats gained control of the U.S. House, but it wasn’t with Budd’s seat. He defeated Manning by a six-point margin in November, claiming 51.54 percent of the vote.

“We ran a great campaign against a good opponent and came out on top,” Budd said. “Campaign season is hard, but I always enjoy getting to speak with people directly about what matters most to them. The national attention is nice, but what matters is connecting with voters and keeping your promises.”

Looking onward to next year, Budd said he plans to continue moving forward with important legislation.

“We’ve done a lot of great bipartisan work on the Financial Services Committee regarding illicit finance and banking regulations,” Budd said.
