From staff reports

TYRO — After multiple postponements and reschedules, Salisbury’s  girls soccer team played West Davidson in frigid weather on Wednesday.

The contest was a coming-out party for freshman Sutton Webb. Her four goals powered Salisbury (2-0, 1-0) to a 5-0 win over its  arch-rival in the Central Carolina Conference.

“We lost almost 90 goals  from last year’s squad, and Sutton has taken advantage of her opportunity,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “She works hard and competes every minute of the match.”

Piper Muire scored the other goal for the Hornets on a corner from Lillie Rusher. Assists went to Sydney Hlavacek, Ellen Simons and Muire.

The SHS defense was anchored by Olivia Dagenhart, Elle Kennedy, Rusher and Clara Brown.  Caroline Clark made four saves in goal.

“This was a big contest,” Parrish said. “It is no secret how much respect I have for their coach (Chris Brown) and their program. It is unfortunate that we had to play each other so early in the season and  under such difficult conditions. That being said, any win over WD means something to our girls. We’ve competed so closely for so long that even rising freshman understand the gravity of our rivalry and the importance of each game.”

Salisbury hopes to make  up the Thomasville postponement tonight.

The home opener for the Hornets is Monday against Lexington.
