SALISBURY — Police continue to investigate a weekend shooting at a local business center where it appears someone rented space for a party. Two people were shot during an altercation outside the South Main Street building. One person was critically injured.
Salisbury Police Department officers responded at 1:35 a.m. to Kents Executive Park, at 903 S. Main St., across the street from Poppatops convenience store. Multiple gunshots had been fired.
Officers found Keandra Jackson, 17, lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound to her abdomen. Officers administered first aid until fire and EMS personnel arrived.
Police officials said Jackson was critically wounded and remains at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where she was taken by helicopter. She remained in critical condition Monday, said police Lt. Greg Beam.
While officers were at the scene, a second victim, Dadrian Campbell, 19, arrived at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center’s emergency department with a gunshot wound to his ankle. Police said Campbell jumped into a car and asked the driver to take him to the hospital.
Beam said the two teenagers were caught in the crossfire of gunshots. Police have not been able to speak with Jackson. Campbell was released from the hospital.
Investigators are working to determine who rented the party space.
An altercation was reported on the street after the party. More than 30 shots from different caliber weapons were fired, officials said.
On Monday morning, Salisbury High School was placed on a code yellow lockdown as a precaution in response to the weekend shooting.
Principal Luke Brown sent a Connect-ED message to parents that said the school was being placed on lockdown at the advisement of law enforcement.
“This is a precaution suggested by the Salisbury Police Department while they investigate events that took place off campus this weekend. The school has had no specific threats to it or any of our students. We are simply following the suggestion of law enforcement to ensure the safety of all students at all times,” the message read.
A code yellow lockdown means all classes will be continue as normal with all exterior and classroom doors locked. Students are allowed to change classes during a code yellow lockdown.
The lockdown was ended at 11 a.m., said Rowan-Salisbury Spokeswoman Rita Foil.
