Area Sports Briefs: West tennis wraps up second place

CHINA GROVE — West Rowan’s boys tennis team wrapped up second place in the North Piedmont Conference with an 8-1 win against Carson on Monday.
West (10-3, 8-2) clinched a playoff berth.
West got wins from Kevin Sullivan, Layton Butler, TJ Smith, Trevor Mervine and Steven Wilmot in singles and from Sullivan/Smith, Butler/Alex Keadle and Mervine/Wilmot in doubles.
Nathaniel Kimball won for the Cougars in singles.

DENTON — North Rowan defeated South Davidson 8-1 on the road in a Yadkin Valley Conference match played on Monday.
Winning in singles for North were Hans Roemer, JD Hager, Ray Montes, Terrance Settlemeyer, Arizona Day and Garrett Jennings.
Winning in doubles were Roemer/Hager and Montes/Lee Patterson.

STATESVILLE — East Rowan won both matches in a North Piedmont Conference doubleheader at Statesville on Monday.

The Central Carolina Conference Tournament got under way on Monday in Lexington.
The top seven singles and doubles entries from the 10-team league advance to regional play.
Salisbury’s Juan Salazar was eliminated, but Jander Rodas-Palacios won two matches to reach the semifinals.
Salisbury’s top four players are competing in doubles. Leo Schiavinato/Ethan McGee and Roarke Burton/Sean Archer have advanced to the semifinals.
• South Rowan’s Joey Carracio and Noah Steedley were eliminated in singles matches.
HS girls soccer
Carson won against North Iredell on Tuesday in a match that went to PKs after being tied 2-all at the end of regulation and the overtime periods.
Gracie Thomason and Emelyn Soto scored goals for the Cougars.
Lani Isley, Thomason, Riley Isley, Sarah Christy and Taylor Conrad converted in the PK round.
Carson stayed undefeated in the North Piedmont Conference.

Salisbury improved to 15-2 overall and 13-1 in the Central Carolina Conference with a pivotal 3-0 win over Central Davidson on Monday.
Salisbury scored less than four minutes into the match when a corner kick sent in by Lillie Rusher hit a Spartan defender and crossed the end line.
The Hornets got goals from Sutton Webb and Ellen Simons before halftime. Anna Grace Woolly provided both assists.
Salisbury got excellent play from the defense of Olivia Dagenhart, Elle Kennedy, Rusher and Clara Brown.
Caroline Clark recorded four saves for the shutout.
Central Davidson played without leading scorer Larkin Rabon (ankle).
Next up for the Hornets is Oak Grove on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Oak Grove won 9-0 against South Rowan on Monday.
HS softball
Lauren Ritchie’s double in the eighth inning lifted A.L. Brown to a 5-4 win against Carson on Monday.
Kaitlyn Honeycutt doubled and had three of Carson’s seven hits in the non-conference game.
Ritchie had two hits.
Tali Hagler pitched a complete game for the Wonders. She struck out five and walked two.

Carson routed Statesville in North Piedmont Conference action on Monday, 17-1.
Madison Anderson went 4-for-4 with six RBIs. Katelyn McGee was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Sierra Ratliff scored four runs. Makayla Johnson had three hits. Ashlyn Ellenburg and Lilli Heard had two hits each to back the pitching of Kaitlyn Honeycutt.
Carson hosts West Rowan tonight.

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan scored in the eighth inning on Mary Sobatka’s RBI single to beat Davie County in Monday’s non-conference softball game, 6-5. Megyn Spicer started the eighth with a double.
West pitcher Whitley Arnott went all eight innings, striking out 17 and walking three.
Hannah Pratt homered for the Falcons (14-2). Sobataka and KK Dowling had two hits each. Kenadi Sproul scored two runs. Sproul tripled. Taylor Walton doubled.
Desiree Lewis and Caitlyn Sechrist homered for Davie, and London Dirks drove in two.

Salisbury lost to Oak Grove on Tuesday in Central Carolina Conference action, 14-3.
Ellen Yang pitched well (no earned runs), but the Hornets were hurt by nine errors in the five-inning game.
Mallory Link had the only hit for the Hornets.

Riley Tucker and Destiny Thornton blasted homers as Central Cabarrus beat Cox Mill in South Piedmont Conference softball on Monday, 17-3.
Both teams will be in the Civitan Easter Tournament to be played
HS baseball
North Rowan routed Gray Stone, 19-4, in a Yadkin Valley Conference game on Monday.
Jordan Goodine was the winning pitcher. He also doubled and drove in three.
Charlie Durham had three hits and three RBIs. Chase Shoaf had two hits and three RBIs. Gavin Kuld had three RBIs. Sydney Patton had two hits.
HS boys golf
SALISBURY — East Rowan shot 162 to win Monday’s North Piedmont Conference golf match at Crescent.
Medalist Colby Patterson shot 35 to lead the Mustangs. Austin Miller (39), Ethan Mastro (42) and Alex Miller (46) were the other scorers for East.
David Tadlock and Jake Carlton had 42s for second-place West Rowan (172).
Ethan Scarbough’s 42 led Carson (184) to third place.

Oak Grove shot 163 to win Monday’s Central Carolina Conference match at Wilshire.
Salisbury shot 165 for second place. Hank Robins (38), Will Fowler (39), Will Webb (43) and Luke Graeber (45) scored for the Hornets.
South Rowan finished eighth. Andrew Coward’s 42 led the Raiders.
Intimidators
SALISBURY, Md. — Daniel Fajardo hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning, as the Delmarva Shorebirds beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 8-7 on Monday.
The Intimidators tied the game 7-7 in the top of the ninth when Ramon Beltre scored on an error as part of a five-run inning.
Matt De La Rosa (1-0) got the win in relief, while Andrew Perez (0-1) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.
College tennis
Catawba’s women are seeded eighth for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament and will play at No. 1 Tusculum today at 2 p.m.
College football
Virginia Tech’s Zion DeBose (North Rowan) has been a big asset off the field for the program.
Virginia Tech coaches have made DeBose the lead team liaison for community outreach.
DeBose, a defensive end, redshirted in 2017 and played in all the Hokies’ games in 2018, making five tackles.
Mid. school soccer
West Rowan’s girls lost to North Rowan, 2-1.
Anna Mead scored for the Bulldogs.

Juan Arteaga had theshutout in goal Defensive standouts were Zion Johnson and Juan Calleja.
Luis Elizalde had two assists. Goals were scored by Franco Reyes and Adrian Aragon.
