SALISBURY — Several inmates at Piedmont Correctional Institution were injured in a fight Monday afternoon, according to a news release from the prison.

Inmates began fighting each other in the prison yard about 2:15 p.m. Monday, the release said. Four offenders were taken to outside medical facilities with non-life-threatening injuries. Several others were treated at the prison. It was unclear Monday afternoon how many total inmates were involved.

Piedmont Correctional Institution is on Camp Road in Salisbury.

The facility was placed on lockdown Monday afternoon, the release said. Outside law enforcement was called in and is working with prison staff on the investigation.

N.C. Department of Public Safety spokesman Clyde Roper said he was unable to provide additional details about the incident.

The Salisbury Police Department is assisting with the case, but it also told the Post it could not provide any additional information Monday afternoon.
