ROCKWELL — A Rockwell man was charged with weapons-related offenses after he denied having a gun.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said the man, who as a convicted felon is not supposed to have a gun, couldn’t explain why he was wearing a gun holster.
Brandon Riley Templeton, 23, was charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and firing into an occupied vehicle.
Deputies responded Friday in the 8400 block of U.S. 52 to a report of shots fired. They spoke with Alicia Cross about whether she heard gunshots. She told them she was not aware of gunshots.
She said her mother and Templeton, who is Cross’ boyfriend, had argued about clothing. Her mother was not at the home, but Templeton was inside.
Deputies asked Templeton if he had any weapons, and he said is a convicted felon and didn’t have any guns.
The officer asked Templeton why he had a holster on his side, and Templeton said he didn’t know how the holster got there. The deputy searched Templeton for a gun, but he didn’t find one.
Melissa Cross told deputies that she and two others were inside a vehicle that Templeton fired on after he became upset. The other two corroborated her account. Melissa Cross said Templeton fired at her vehicle as she tried to leave.
Deputies found a small bullet hole on the side of a car. Templeton said it had been there for weeks, but authorities said it looked recent.
Templeton remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond.
