Area Sports: Freeman signs

The Cleveland Indians announced the signing of UNC infielder Ike Freeman (East Rowan) on Wednesday. Freeman was a 14th-round draft pick. He’s expected to be a third baseman in the minor leagues.

Local golf

Salisbury’s Charlie Barr  (Cannon School) shot 70-66 — 136 and finished third at 6-under in the 2019 Carolinas Junior PGA Championship for boys 13-18  on Tuesday and Wednesday in Kannapolis at The Club at Irish Creek.

Salisbury High’s Hank Robins shot 73-69 — 142 and tied for 23rd.

A qualifier for the 119th  North & South Amateur Championship will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Pinehurst No. 8.

Salisbury’s Michael Childress and Concord’s Walker Cress will be among those trying to qualify.

The Rowan Masters entry deadline has been extended to Friday, June 21.

Qualifying is June 22 at Warrior. The tournament is June 28-30.

Fishing

Locals Harrison McCall and Carson Palmer won the first annual Student Angler Federation championship.

They have qualified for national competition.

Legion baseball

Stokes County beat Eatern Randolph 6-2 on Wednesday in a Northern Division game in Area III.

Colby Guy had three hits  for Stokes, and Jake Craddock pitched six innings.

Jr. Legion baseball

Kannapolis Post 115 won  6-4 against East Rowan on Wednesday.

Weston Smith had two hits, and two RBIs and Michael Specht had two hits hits for Post 115.

Mattox Henderson had two hits and two RBIs to lead East (9-5, 5-1). Morgan Padgett  had two hits.

Jr. Legion softball

Kannapolis rallied to beat Davidson County 5-4 on Wednesday.
