NEWTON —In the 10th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship being held at Catawba Country Club, Raleigh’s Quinn Riley and Concord’s Walker Cress  (James Madison) shot 5-under 65s in stroke qualifying on Wednesday to share the lead.

Two rounds of stroke play will trim the field to 32 golfers for the match play portion of the event— the top 31 scores, plus the defending champion.

Michael Childress (Cannon School,  Richmond) shot 2-under 68 Wednesday and is tied for eighth. Childress made seven birdies and five bogeys.

Stephen Carroll (Concord, East Carolina) shot 70, while Davis Richards (South Rowan, N.C. State) shot 71.

DAVIDSON —  In the 15th Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship at River Run Country Club in Davidson,     Kenan Poole of Raleigh jumped to the top of the leaderboard after a second-round 66.

Local golfer Charlie Barr (Cannon School) has shot 79-75 — 155 and is tied for 38th.  The field has been cut to 70 players for the final round.

KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn.  — Grace Yatawara (Salisbury, East Carolina) has shot 75-76-83 — 234 in the Ladies National Golf Association Amateur Championship and is 62nd.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS— Alec Kisena and three other pitchers combined for a shutout as the Columbia Fireflies defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 3-0 on Wednesday. The Fireflies snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory.

Kisena (2-2) picked up the win after he struck out six and walked one while allowing three hits over five scoreless innings. Kevin Folman (0-3) went five innings, allowing three runs and five hits in the South Atlantic League game. He also struck out five and walked one.

Columbia scored its runs when Mark Vientos hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Hayden Senger hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The Intimidators were held off the scoreboard for the fifth time this season, while the Fireflies’ staff recorded their fifth shutout of the year.

The Chicago White Sox announced infielder Andrew Vaughn has been promoted to Winston-Salem from Kannapolis.

The third overall selection in the 2019 MLB Draft, Vaughn earned his first career promotion.  Vaughn joins the Dash roster after posting a batting line of .253/.388/.410 with two homers for Kannapolis.

NBA

The Charlotte Hornets announced the team has signed 36th overall pick Cody Martin and his undrafted brother, Caleb Martin, to contracts.

Both Martin twins started their high school careers at Davie County High.

Lady Legion softball

Second-seeded Davidson County beat fourth-seeded Iredell County 6-2 on Wednesday in the Area II championship game.
