Teen found with stolen car charged with attempted break-in

SALISBURY — A Salisbury teenager who had a stolen vehicle was charged with breaking and entering after police said he was spotted by the maintenance staff at Lakewood Apartments trying to break into an apartment, according to a police report.

The Salisbury Police Department charged Xavier Nathaniel Gibbs, 16, of the 500 block of East Fisher Street, with misdemeanor breaking and entering and felony possession of a stolen vehicle. He remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $7,500 secured bond.

The incident was reported at 12:23 p.m. Friday on Lakewood Drive. A maintenance worker said he saw a young man using his shoulder to try to force open a door of an apartment. When the man could not open the door, he walked away. Maintenance workers said he was driving a black Honda.

When police caught up with Gibbs, he was walking near Lash Drive and Statesville Boulevard. He had a set of Honda car keys . Police said the car was stolen in Charlotte.
