From staff reports

SHELBY — Salisbury’s boys soccer team lost 4-3 in overtime at Shelby on Saturday in the second round of the 2A state playoffs.

The Hornets (16-8) led 1-0 at halftime and moved ahead 2-0 early in the second half on a pair of goals by Chris Portillo,  but the Golden Lions came back to tie the match at 2-all with seven minutes left in regulation.

Shelby went up 4-2 in the overtimes  before Juan Salazar scored a goal for the Hornets.

•••

Gray Stone advanced in the 1A playoffs on Saturday with a 3-0 win against Highland School of Technology.

Third-seeded Gray Stone had a first-round bye  and will host No. 11 Bishop McGuinness in the  third round.

HS football

Carson lost at South Iredell on Friday, 51-21, to close the season.

The Cougars (2-9) got two rushing touchdowns from Alex London.

Hunter Courtney rushed 14 times for 126 yards and a touchdown.

•••

West Rowan, North Rowan, Salisbury, A.L. Brown and Davie are in the   playoff brackets that were released on Saturday by the NCHSAA.

North Rowan (8-3) is in the 1AA East bracket, which will be something new.

As the No. 4 seed, the Cavaliers have a first-round bye and will host the Princeton-East Carteret winner in a second-round game on Nov. 22.

No. 5 seed Princeton (9-1)  was undefeated before it lost Friday night.

Powerhouse Tarboro, perennial state champ, is the No. 1 seed in the bracket. If North Rowan wins in the second round, it’s next destination would be Tarboro.

Yadkin Valley Conference teams North Stanly and South Stanly also went to the East bracket and will play each other in the first round in New London.

•••

West Rowan is the No. 9 seed in the 3A West bracket, not as strong a seed as the Falcons had anticipated.

That means a first-round road game in Morganton against No. 8 Freedom on Nov. 15. Both teams are 7-4.

Crest is the No. 1 seed in the bracket. Assuming the Chargers win in the first round, they’d be hosting the West-Freedom winner in the second round.

Unbeaten Statesville, which edged West Rowan in overtime on Friday, is the No. 2 seed in the bracket.

•••

Salisbury is the No. 7 seed in the 2AA East bracket. The Hornets will be hosting No. 10 Mount Pleasant in the first round.

Mount Pleasant is only  4-7 but upset West Stanly on Friday to tie for second place in the Rocky River and owned the tiebreaker over West Stanly for the five-team league’s second berth in the state playoffs.

Most of the Central Carolina Conference teams went to the East. North Davidson, Ledford and Oak Grove are also in Salisbury’s bracket.

Unbeaten Randleman is the No. 1 seed in the bracket.

Being placed in the East, unusual, but not unprecedented, for Salisbury, the Hornets (9-2) would likely be headed to the coast if they make it to the second round. Washington is the No. 2 seed. Washington is 232 miles from Salisbury.

•••

A.L. Brown (7-3) is the No. 10 seed in the 3AA West bracket.

The Wonders will be on the road to the Asheville area in the first round. They’ll play at No. 7 T.C. Roberson (5-6).

T.C. Roberson got third place in a nine-team league,  so it got an automatic berth for the playoffs. That’s why it has a better seed than the Wonders, an at-large team.

Weddington, the No. 1 seed in the bracket, is hosting No. 16 South Iredell.

Cox Mill is No. 4 and Northwest Cabarrus is No. 5, so they could potentially meet — for the third time this season — in the second round.

Central Cabarrus is No.  11.

•••

Davie is in the 4A West bracket as the No. 7 seed.

The War Eagles (6-5) will host No. 10 West Meck  (6-4).

Grimsley is the No. 1 seed in the bracket.  East Forsyth is No. 2.
