Area Sports: Both Catawba teams top 100 points, school record for DeShazo

SALISBURY — Nine points in the second quarter, but 46 in the third quarter for the Catawba women’s basketball team on Saturday night.

Catawba (7-0, 3-0) got the frantic pace it wanted and finally beat scrappy UVa-Wise 101-86 for a South Atlantic Conference victory. The Indians stayed tied for first in the league with Anderson.

Junior Taisha DeShazo had a mind-boggling game for the Indians, scoring a school-record 42 points. She shot 13-for-24 from the floor and hit seven 3-pointers.

The previous Catawba record was 41 points by Danyel Locklear.

Sheyma Stanback scored 14, while freshman Sara McIntosh added 13.

UVa-Wise (5-3, 1-2) led 44-32 at halftime.

Caitlyn Ross led the visitors with 25 points.

Catawba men win

SALISBURY — Scoring 62 points in the second half, Catawba’s men’s baskeball team was able to pull away from UVa-Wise late Saturday night.

Catawba (6-2, 2-1) led by three at halftime but won the South Atlantic Conference game, 109-87.

Catawba made only nine turnovers.

Daquan Lilly scored 20 for the Indians.

Devin Cooper had an amazing night in a couple of ways — 12-for-12 at the foul line and 11 assists. He didn’t shoot well from the field but still scored 18.

Malik Constantine had a 14 and 10 double-double.

Marcell Haskett made four 3-pointers and scored 18.

Ben Zemonek had 11 points and eight rebounds in just 16 minutes.

There were six technicals called, with four going against the Indians.

Both Catawba teams reached 100 points on the same night for the first time ever.

Former Thomasville High star Cameron Whiteside scored 31 for UVa-Wise.

JV girls hoops.

Carson topped A.L. Brown, 27-11.

Camden Corley and Kendall Barbee scored seven each for the Cougars, while  Alaiyah White and Janyla Duncan scored six.

SAC women

Anderson topped Carson-Newman on Saturday, 77-74.

McKenzie Gadson (Carson) had 13 points (2 3-pointers), three rebounds and three assists for Anderson.

High school baseball

Carson shortstop Zeb Burns signed with Catawba.

Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) led Sri Lanka to a gold medal in team competition in the South Asian Games and was the individual champion. A story is upcoming.
