Area Sports: LC men win in OT; Catawba men lose at Queens

RALEIGH — Roger Ray scored 33 points and Lydell Elmore had 24 points and 16 rebounds as Livingstone’s men’s basketball team won 109-104 in overtime at Shaw late Wednesday.

Ray shot 12-for-22 and made four 3-pointers.

Livingstone shot 57 percent from the field and 50 percent on 3-pointers.

Malik Smith scored 13 for the Blue Bears (10-7, 5-3), while Anthony Tate added 12.

Shaw (4-12, 1-8) got 29 points from Greyson Kelley, 28 from Nigel Martin and 27 from DaVaughn Kelsie.

Catawba men

CHARLOTTE — Queens scored twice as many points in the paint and beat Catawba’s 25th-ranked men’s basketball team on Wednesday, 90-80.

It was the second straight SAC loss for the Indians. They’re in the toughest part of their schedule. They lost at third-ranked Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.

Catawba (11-4, 6-3) didn’t have the shooting night it needed to have — 38.2 percent, 8-for-27 on 3-pointers — and dropped the battle for second place in the South Atlantic Conference.

Queens (12-3, 7-2) shot 45.8 percent and was 8-for-20 on 3-pointers. Queens led by 16 at halftime and enjoyed some 20-point leads in the contest.

Catawba got 21 points from Devin Cooper. Marcell Haskett made three 3-pointers and scored 14. Daquan Lilly had seven points and eight boards, while Larry McLeod had eight points and seven rebounds.

Daniel Carr scored 23 for Queens, with nine points coming from the foul line.

Catawba will look to bounce back at home on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Lenoir-Rhyne.

LC women win

Daisa Harris had 21 points and eight rebounds and led Livingstone’s women’s basketball team to a 66-58 CIAA win at Shaw on Wednesday.

Harris also had eight rebounds for the Blue Bears  (7-8, 4-4). Darra Walker scored 12 points. Adell Allen had eight points and seven assists.

Livingstone shot 39 percent and made seven 3-pointers.

Shaw (6-10, 2-6) shot a little better than the Blue Bears, and the rebounding was even, but LC only committed nine turnovers, while forcing 16.

Victoria Swanson scored 15 for Shaw.

Women’s basketball

McKenzie Gadson (Carson) had seven points, four rebounds and two steals as Anderson routed Coker ton Wednesday and stayed tied for first in the SAC with Catawba.

  Pfeiffer’s Kortni Pinion, Brina Bentley  nd A’Mya McClain scored in double figures in an 83-52 win against Salem on Wednesday.

Shenell Pharr (East Rowan) scored eight for Salem.
